FAQ
WHY YOU SHOULD REPLACE YOUR WINDOWS

When to replace window frames?

Window frames may often appear to be in good condition, but are they still able to guarantee adequate thermal insulation and comfort in the home? It is important not to limit yourself to the aesthetic aspect to determine whether replacement can be postponed or whether the time has come to intervene to improve domestic well-being.

There are clear signals that should not be underestimated. In this article, in just 3 minutes of reading, you will find the answer to the question "when is it time to change the window frames at home?" along with practical advice and an effective solution to make the right choice with guaranteed results.

Replacing Windows: Here are 3 Cases to Take Immediate Action!

Windows are essential for home comfort and contribute significantly to energy savings. If your windows are old and no longer up to the standards of modern technology, it is advisable to replace them. However, in many cases, the windows still appear to be in good condition. In these cases, it is difficult to decide whether to wait or act immediately, unless these signs appear:

Significant increases in bills with reduced home comfort;
Formation of mold around windows;
Sound insulation problems that make the rooms noisy and unpleasant.

Case 1 – Replacing Windows for Thermal Insulation Problems (and High Bills!)

If you notice drafts that penetrate during windy days, it is a sign that the windows are no longer insulating properly. This could be due to a structural failure, a closing system that is no longer hermetic, or an initial installation that was poorly done. Even if the window appears to be in good aesthetic condition, constant drafts lead to an increase in energy costs, especially in winter, when the heating must work at maximum to maintain a minimum level of comfort. In this case, it is better not to wait: it is time to replace the windows.

Case 2 – Replacing windows to eliminate thermal bridges

If the windows have been installed with ineffective techniques or poor materials, thermal bridges may have formed, points where heat is more easily dispersed, causing condensation and mold. This is not just an energy problem, but also a health problem, since environments with mold are neither healthy nor comfortable. The presence of mold around windows is a clear sign that replacement is necessary.

Case 3 – Replacing windows to improve sound insulation

Where air passes, noise also passes. If the windows no longer guarantee perfect insulation, in addition to the problems of heat loss, you will also have difficulty maintaining peace in your home. Even a small uninsulated spot can let external noise pass through, compromising your psychophysical well-being. If noise has become a problem, it is time to choose latest-generation windows, capable of guaranteeing noise reduction of more than 40 dB.

When is it worth changing your window frames?

Changing your window frames is a simple and convenient operation. There are government incentives that allow you to recover a large part of the investment for the supply and installation of new window frames. By choosing high-performance products, you guarantee your home safety, energy savings and comfort.

Wooden Windows:

Wood looks warm and elegant, but it needs some care to protect it from weather and wear.

  • Cleaning: Regularly wipe the frames with a soft cloth that is damp with water and a mild cleaner. Don't use strong or rough products that could damage the paint or finish.
  • Checking the Finish: Check the paint or sealant from time to time. If you see cracks or peeling, it's important to fix it to stop water from getting into the wood.
  • Oiling: Oil the hinges and other moving parts at least once a year with a product made for windows and doors.
  • Protective Treatments: Every few years, depending on the weather, think about putting on a new layer of paint or sealant to protect the wood.

Steel Windows:

Steel is strong and lasts a long time, but it can get rusty if you don't look after it.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the frames with a soft cloth and soapy water. For harder stains, you can use special stainless steel cleaners, making sure to follow the instructions.
  • Checking for Rust: Regularly check for any signs of rust, especially where there are scratches or damaged areas. If there's a little rust, you can treat it with special products. For bigger problems, it's best to ask a professional.
  • Oiling: Regularly oil the moving parts like hinges and handles so they move smoothly.

Aluminum Windows:

Aluminum is light, doesn't rust easily, and doesn't need much care.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the frames with a soft cloth, water, and a mild cleaner. Don't use rough sponges or very strong products that could make the paint look dull.
  • Checking the Paint: Regularly check if the paint has any scratches or damage. Even though aluminum doesn't rust easily, damage to the paint can make it weaker over time.
  • Oiling: Oil the hinges and other moving parts at least once a year.

PVC Windows:

PVC is easy to use and doesn't need much special care.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the frames with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner. For harder stains, you can use cleaners made for PVC. Don't use strong solvents that could damage the surface.
  • Checking the Seals: Regularly check the condition of the rubber seals. If they are worn or damaged, replace them to keep heat and noise out.
  • Oiling: Oil the moving parts like hinges and handles to make sure they move easily.

General Tips for All Materials:

  • Regular Cleaning: Regularly remove dust and dirt from the glass and frames to stop build-up that can damage the surfaces.
  • Checking Opening and Closing: Make sure handles, hinges, and other parts work properly. Fix any problems quickly.
  • Checking the Seals: The rubber seals help keep heat and noise out. Check that they are in good condition and still flexible.
  • Ventilation: Make sure your rooms have good airflow to avoid water build-up (condensation), which can damage windows, especially wooden ones, over time.

The main difference between Ecobonus and Renovation Bonus lies in their purpose. The Ecobonus is aimed at improving domestic energy efficiency, with interventions aimed at optimizing thermal comfort. The Renovation Bonus, on the other hand, is aimed at extraordinary maintenance interventions that require enabling titles (CILA or SCIA) and can also include works for energy improvement.

Some interventions, such as the replacement of windows or biomass or class A condensing boilers (without intelligent thermoregulation systems), can be carried out with both the Ecobonus and the Renovation Bonus. However, the purchase and installation of solar screens fall exclusively within the Ecobonus.

Deductible rates of the Ecobonus and the Renovation Bonus

Both bonuses allow you to deduct a portion of the expenses incurred for interventions aimed at improving the energy efficiency and condition of buildings. With the Renovation Bonus the deductible rate is 50%, while the Ecobonus can reach 65% or 70% for more significant energy saving works, such as the replacement of air conditioning systems or the installation of solar panels.

For condominiums, the Ecobonus offers an even higher rate, reaching up to 85% for buildings located in seismic zones.

Spending limits
The Renovation Bonus has a maximum spending limit of 96,000 euros for each housing unit, regardless of the number of works carried out. The Ecobonus, on the other hand, provides different maximum limits for each intervention, for example 30,000 euros for the replacement of air conditioning systems and 60,000 euros for solar screens. This allows you to exceed the limit of the Renovation Bonus for more complex works.

Differences in beneficiaries
The Renovation Bonus offers a 50% IRPEF deduction and applies exclusively to private residential properties. The Ecobonus, on the other hand, also includes IRES, extending the benefits to taxpayers with business income, such as companies and professionals, and involves buildings of all cadastral categories, including rural and instrumental ones.

If you are considering replacing your windows and are undecided between aluminum or PVC frames, this guide will help you better understand the differences between the two materials. We will analyze the characteristics, pros and cons, sustainability, prices, durability and design, to help you make an informed choice.

The main differences between aluminum and PVC frames

The main differences between aluminum and PVC frames derive from the mechanical properties of the two materials.

Aluminum frames: characteristics Aluminum is a lightweight, robust and weather-resistant material, which makes it very durable and requires little maintenance. Thanks to its workability and resistance, it is ideal for large frames or custom shapes. From a design point of view, aluminum frames offer a wide range of RAL colors.

An additional advantage is the sustainability of aluminum, which is easily recyclable and often disposable for free. However, since aluminum is a good thermal conductor, it requires a thermal cut to improve insulation, which can increase costs. Frames without thermal insulation do not allow access to tax incentives such as the Ecobonus.

PVC frames: characteristics PVC frames, unlike aluminum, have lower mechanical resistance, making them less suitable for large openings. Steel inserts are often used to reinforce PVC. Furthermore, PVC is more sensitive to atmospheric agents and tends to fade when exposed to the sun, especially in dark colors, which require special treatments and are more expensive.

From a sustainability point of view, PVC is recyclable, but only up to 7 times, and its disposal can be expensive, as it is considered special waste. On the other hand, PVC frames offer excellent thermal performance thanks to the insulating nature of the material, with transmittance values generally better than aluminum. Furthermore, PVC is cheaper than aluminum.

Comparison of aluminum and PVC frames Duration: Aluminum frames last between 50 and 60 years, while PVC frames last between 25 and 30 years.

Size: Aluminum frames are ideal for large openings and custom shapes, while PVC frames are more suitable for standard sizes.
Finishes and colors: Aluminum offers a wide range of RAL colors, while PVC is limited to light shades such as white and beige, with higher costs for dark colors.
Sustainability: Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and easily disposable, while PVC is recyclable up to 7 times and its disposal is more expensive.
Thermal performance: The thermal transmittance of aluminum frames with thermal break varies between 2.2 and 3.8 W/m2K, while that of PVC frames is 2.0-2.2 W/m2K.
Prices: Aluminum frames usually cost twice as much per square meter as PVC.

When to choose aluminum frames
For large windows or special shapes.
In areas exposed to the elements, where aluminum resists better.
If the condominium regulations require specific colors.
If you want durable frames (up to 60 years).
If you prefer recyclable and sustainable materials.

When to choose PVC frames
If you have a limited budget.
If you prefer a warmer feel to the touch than aluminum.
If the windows are not exposed to direct sunlight and you need high thermal performance at a lower cost.

Conclusion
Both materials have advantages and disadvantages. The choice between PVC and aluminum depends on your specific needs, such as budget, window size, location and design.

Increased security

Grasslets represent a solid barrier against attempted theft and intrusions, especially for those who live in houses with gardens or on lower floors. Installing them on windows and French windows significantly limits the risk of break-ins, ensuring constant protection.

Modern and customizable aesthetics

In addition to their protective function, grates can be made with modern and refined designs, adding a touch of style to your home. Thanks to their customization, they integrate perfectly with any type of furniture, enhancing both internal and external spaces.

Ease of installation

Grasslets are simple and quick to install. In most cases, installation does not require masonry work, allowing you to strengthen the security of your home without invasive interventions.

Brightness and ventilation

Unlike other security solutions, grates do not compromise the view, the entry of natural light or ventilation. This makes them particularly suitable for windows facing gardens or terraces, maintaining a bright and comfortable environment.

Durable and resistant materials

Made of steel and powder-coated, the grates offer excellent resistance against the elements and do not require maintenance. They maintain their characteristics over time, offering long-lasting and reliable protection.

Installing grates not only guarantees greater safety, but also enhances the aesthetic appearance of your home, offering you serenity and comfort without sacrificing light and air.

Mosquito nets are often associated exclusively with mosquito protection, especially during the summer. However, they have become a versatile and functional solution for every season. Let's find out together why installing them at home or in the office is a smart choice.

1. Protection against all insects and small animals
Mosquitoes are not the only problem! Mosquito nets offer protection against a wide range of insects, such as flies and bedbugs, present all year round. In addition, for those who live in the countryside, they can prevent the entry of small animals such as mice or snakes, ensuring greater safety.

2. Ventilate the rooms safely
Indoor pollution is an issue often overlooked, but opening windows to exchange air is essential to improve the quality of indoor air. With mosquito nets, you can keep the windows open without worrying about unwanted intrusions, thus maintaining a healthier environment.

3. Greater natural light
By installing mosquito nets, you will no longer have to lower blinds or close shutters to prevent insects from entering. This allows you to benefit from natural light that not only illuminates your spaces, but is also beneficial for your health and contributes to the production of vitamin D.

4. Energy saving
Although they are not included among the solar screens allowed for the Ecobonus, some mosquito nets can help reduce energy consumption, especially in combination with insulating glass. In summer, mosquito nets allow you to keep the windows open during the coolest hours, reducing the need for air conditioning and, consequently, the costs on your bill.

5. Fewer chemicals
Using chemical sprays and repellents against mosquitoes can be harmful to your health and the environment. Mosquito nets offer an ecological and safe solution to protect you from bites without the use of chemicals.

6. A touch of design
Mosquito nets are no longer just functional: today there are models with a modern and refined design, which can add a touch of elegance to your fixtures. Customizable in both style and technical requirements, they can improve the aesthetics of your home without compromising its practicality.
